The 25 year old Jamaican sprinter, Usain Bolt has on Sunday August 5, 2012 sealed the legendary status as the fastest man in the world after finishing with a resounding victory in the men's 100m race at the London 2012 olympics. Usain Bolt clocked an olympic record of 9.63 seconds, the second fastest time in history, after his 9.58 seconds world record at Berlin at the World Championships in August 2009. Jamaican compatriot and training partner Yohan Blake, long tipped as Bolt's
successor as the fastest man in the world, claimed silver after equalling his
personal best of 9.75sec. American 2004 Olympic gold medallist Justin Gatlin completed his remarkable
comeback from a four-year doping ban by taking the bronze medal in a personal
best of 9.79sec.
The victory is so sweet and glorious for the athlete but only God knows the amount of training that went into the preparations for a performance that only lasts for 9.63 seconds. As short as this period seems it is a rewarding moment for the athlete who excels. There is big satisfaction and fulfillment that comes with knowing that the months and even years of training has yielded results.
What does it take to become a world class athlete?
According to John Lather, a renowned sports researcher, the number one
variable related to elite performance is time spent in training. Lather
estimates that 20 hours of quality training per week for a period of eight years
(approximately 10,000 cumulative hours) appears to be the amount of work
required to reach a world class level. Lather emphasizes that it is 20 hours of
quality training - with great intensity, not just the time spent in training
that is required for elite performance.
How many hours do world class athletes train?
It has been established that the average world class athlete trains
approximately 23 hours a week. Interestingly, the average athlete in America
trains approximately 12 hours a week.
All these for a 9.63 seconds performance? Absolutely Yes!!! The secret lies in the amount and the intensity of the training. This principle is true in all fields of our life.
